Family Friendly Valentine’s Day

Simple Ways to Create a Special Family Friendly Valentine’s Day

I don’t know how you celebrate Valentine’s Day, but my husband and  I decided years ago that we were no longer going to go out on a special date that night. Now hear me out. It seemed like year after year we would have a huge snowstorm, the lines would be too long, we would have a sports event to take one of our kids too, etc. One of us (or both) would end up hangry and it was just so.much.pressure!!

We finally decided one year that we were just going to stay home for Valentine’s Day and make a fancy dinner at home. We would pick some other night to go out for date night and that way we wouldn’t have over-priced food, long lines, big crowds and the added stress that comes alongside all of that. Let me tell ya, it was the best decision ever.

Since then, we’ve created our very own tradition in how we celebrate the day of love. We make a themed dinner usually involving pink or red foods, things that can be cut into the shape of hearts, a special dessert and even some kid-friendly pink bubbly. We light candles, use the “good” plates and have so much fun. After dinner, the kiddos exchange some Valentine’s and we gift them a little something that’s typically less than $5.

Maybe you’re arguing that Valentine’s Day is meant for couples and it should be a special day. Maybe we’re just getting old or we’ve been married for too long, but I don’t need a special date to love on my guy or to know he loves me, and the kids truly enjoy this night and that we’ve included them. We save money, I can keep wearing my yoga pants and we don’t have to wait in line for hours. It’s a win-win!!

I’ll share more next time about what we are having this year, but I’ll tell you that I’m upping my game with a charcuterie board this time. I think the kids are going to love this surprise!

Incase you want to try an at-home Valentine’s date this year, here’s are some super simple options that you’ve still got plenty of time to make. I’m even sharing the easiest cookie recipe I’ve ever known with you. My Granny taught me how to make these cookies years ago, and to this day it’s still one of our family’s favorites. I just added a little spin on it for Valentine’s Day. If you try them, I’d love to hear how they turn out. ❤️

Easiest Peanut Butter Cookies

1 C of peanut butter

1 C of sugar

1 egg

Preheat oven to 350 and use a greased cookie sheet. Combine all ingredients until soft dough forms. Roll into balls the size of a walnut and place on the sheet. Use a fork dipped in water to create the criss cross pattern and flatten the cookie slightly (for heart shaped cookies I gently shaped the dough into a heart first and then used the fork). Bake for 10 minutes or until edges are golden. Once you remove them from the oven, sprinkle some sugar (I used red sanding sugar) and add kisses (optional) while they are still warm.

They taste amazing and the house smells wonderful! Enjoy! 😋
